Nursing homes in one state are revealing a major understaffing epidemic. The epidemic is being blamed for increased abuse and neglect suffered by nursing home patients. Expert testimony was brought before the House of Representatives to address the issue.
“Abuse gets more headlines, but neglect has more victims,” said the nursing home expert during the hearing. “The neglect that I see stems from understaffing. With understaffing, we expect to see more falls and bedsores—and those are the majority of my cases.” Concerns were brought forth that although there are regulations in place, they are failing to be enforced.
