Nursing Home Sued After Woman Died From Infected Pressure Sores

The son of an elderly nursing home resident who died from a bacterial infection that resulted from bed sores has sued the facility. The woman was admitted to the facility in December 2009 with Parkinson’s disease related issues.

Within ten days, the woman became unresponsive and was readmitted to the hospital. Hospital physicians diagnosed the 85-year-old woman with a urinary tract infection, a kidney infection, and a bed sore (also known as pressure sore, pressure ulcer, decubitus sore, and decubitus ulcer) on her tailbone.

After five days in the hospital, the woman returned to the nursing home with strict wound treatments in place. Unfortunately, the woman’s family found her at the facility in urine soaked linens and her pressure ulcers continued to worsen. By March 2009, the woman’s sores had become septic, causing her death.
