Nursing Home Sued For Employee Theft Of $2.5 Million

A nursing home has been brought under a lawsuit after employees stole $2.5 million from a patient's investment account. The family was made aware and immediately took action to become a guardian for patient who over time become highly medicated and unable to reason. The employees were writing and cashing checks from the patient's account for over 2.5 years. “None of the money has been recovered yet,” an attorney for the family said. “When my client found out about it, of course, it stopped immediately. He brought a petition for guardianship and became his father's guardian. [But] at that time, the money's already gone.

The family now wants to hold nursing home management accountable for poor oversight of their employees. “The reason we have elder abuse statutes that the Legislature has passed is because we all know that the elderly are targets of fraud and they are easy victims for people to take advantage of,” said one of the family's attorneys. “People who work with the elderly should be on notice to be watchful that people may be trying to take advantage.” For more, read the story
