Recently, New York State eased restrictions for those visiting loved ones in nursing homes. A facility formerly was required to be Covid-19 free for 28 days before allowing visitors. The state recently decreased that time period to 14 days. Visitors still must present a negative Covid-19 test from the previous seven days, undergo a health screen, wear a mask, and socially distance during their visit. With these requirements in place, many family members feel like visits are more confusing and difficult than window visits and virtual calls.
Visitors report struggling to social distance, feeling the pain of not being able to touch or hug their loved ones, or even check for bruising and pressure ulcers. A Department of Health spokesperson stated that social distancing and wearing a mask has been proven to “be among the most successful COVID prevention measures.”
