Nursing Home Whisteblower Loses Job

A nursing home employee was on medical leave after caring for a high-needs patient for some time. While on leave, she received a photo of a pressure ulcer on the patient's leg so deep, the bone was exposed. The nurse forwarded the photo to a medical colleague out of concern for the severity of it.

Shortly after, the nurse was fired when administration learned of her sharing the photo. The patient also died shortly after the nurse was fired. In a lawsuit, the nurse is seeking damages for wages lost and non-economic benefit. She says she was not fired for violating patient privacy, but for drawing attention to the severe wound that ultimately led to the patient's death. For more, read the story.
