A potentially life-threatening form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, called Legionnaire's disease grows in water systems where water is stored. The spread of this bacteria in nursing homes and hospitals can be prevented, however, precautions must be taken to do so. Water systems have been tested and the bacteria has been identified in numerous nursing homes and hospitals causing concerns regarding the potential for an outbreak.
“We know if those facilities have an effective water-management system they can prevent these infections,” says the CDC's director. “Nobody wants their loved one to go into a hospital or a long-term care facility and end up with Legionnaires' disease.” Staying vigilant to maintain cleanliness in water systems can prevent the spread of the infection.
