As the race for a Covid-19 vaccine comes to an end, nursing home employees are preparing for the intimidating task of vaccinating residents. Over 3 million nursing home and assisted living residents will be the first recipients of the Covid-19 vaccine. While this will be a relief to one of the most affected populations, vaccinating residents will be a new challenge.
According to the Washington Post, the vaccine “must be delivered in two doses a number of weeks apart – to 50,000 residential settings across the country.” Many long-term care facilities will have either CVS or Walgreens on-site clinics to provide the vaccine. While providing vaccines to residents is crucial, many argue that elderly care staff need to be included in this number, as “staff members are the most common source of infection brought from outside into nursing homes.”
If all moves smoothly, this first round of vaccinations could be complete by March. For more on this story, read here.
