Nursing home patients allege that nursing homes are trading them for more lucrative patients. The patients filing complaints in a state court describe the actions of nursing homes as dumping them for patients with greater insurance and reimbursement benefits. Patients with lower reimbursement opportunities are sent to the hospital and refused readmission. Beds are freed for patients that can provide greater reimbursements.
One patient being sent to hospitals for dumping purposes is building costly medical expenses, as the cost per night hospital stay is around $1,900, while the cost for a nursing home bed is just $190 on their specific insurance. One patient reached $218,960 in hospital medical bills after 136 days, which was largely paid by tax payer dollars. Patients are taking their claims to court in hopes of returning to their nursing homes of choice and holding nursing homes accountable for removing patients from their nursing home beds in exchange for higher revenue patients.
