A representative from one state said efforts are under way that could help improve
elder abuse reporting as well as make stiffer laws for those who take
advantage of the state’s senior population. Legislation has been introduced that would establish
the Interagency Council For the Prevention of Elder Abuse (Elder Abuse Prevention Act).
She
said 17 state agencies have been identified as sharing responsibility
in the prevention of elder abuse, healing elder abuse victims and
prosecuting offenders. These agencies, along with five other
groups that include the state bar, sheriff’s association, probate
judges association, the coalition against domestic violence and the State
911 Network, would make up the interagency council.
The director of the Franklin County Department of Human Resources,
said the growth of the senior population has made the issue of elder abuse is of vital importance. He also says that the
legislation would promote new
resources to help battle the growing amount of elder abuse.For more, read the story.
