The beating happened just outside the side door of the assisted living center.
According
to police, a 70-year-old resident was outside
sitting on a bench when a 43-year-old resident went out behind him.
There were staff people in the next room folding towels and their attention was drawn outside when they heard a commotion.
An
employee called the Catawba County 911 Center to report the assault at
11:54 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious. He suffered from an apparent head injury and died at the scene.
The assailant ran a few blocks but authorities caught him quickly. He has been charged with murder. For more, read the story.
