Multiple safety shortcomings were found during coronavirus health inspections at 77 New York nursing homes, including “basic infection-control violations like failing to have staff wear masks or wash their hands.” In addition, multiple homes failed to isolate Covid-19 patients from other, healthy patients, and did not monitor safety precautions taken by nurses and other staff members.
23 nursing homes have been fined since March 1. Nursing homes still struggle to maintain enough staff and personal protection equipment to fight the spread of the virus. Many view these violations as a wake-up call for nursing home administration, while others question if fines will enact long-term change.
