Six nursing homes received fines in one state due to deficiencies. Incidents involving patients that suffered injuries as a result of poor quality care ranged from pressure ulcers to falls, one involving a broken neck bone. The incident involving the patient that suffered the broken neck bone injury went unreported for five days. The pressure ulcer injury went to a deep tissue level when nursing home staff did not follow the advice of a wound specialist.
Injuries from the falls included a broken skull bone and a broken wrist. The patient suffering from a broken skull bone fell out of a mechanical lift and died just six days after. Still other incidents involved untreated skin tears as a result of transferring a patient from a wheelchair to the bed, and pain medication errors leading to yet another patient’s death. Fines from the deficiencies cited by the state health department amounted to $7,200. For more, read the story.
