Georgia State University has received a $1.6 million grant to help improve quality of life for nursing home residents. The money will be used to research best practices for individual residents, rather than merely schedules that are best for the institution as a whole. The money will also fund training of nursing home staff.
“Whether we have dementia, whether we are frail – we still are a person,” said the director of Georgia State University’s Gerontology Institute. “It’s thinking about people’s well-being beyond just ‘Are their minimum physical needs met?’” There may be simple changes to aid in lessening loneliness and loss of independence, often experienced by nursing home residents.
