When visiting their mom at a nursing home, her children were mortified at their mom's condition. They saw her suffering from not only deep bedsores, but also significant dehydration, urinary tract infection, oral thrush, and a host of other ailments. Her daughter said, “she was almost dead.” The called an ambulance to transport their mom to the hospital, where hospital staff notified the police of the neglect. State reports described the patient’s bedsores so deep; bones and tendons were visible.
During the investigation of the nursing home a former nurse of the facility told the police, “the facility had neglected [the patient] due to a staffing shortage.” In numerous cases patients reported they would go weeks without bathing due to the staff shortage.
