The United Way Day of Caring, an annual event that involves hundreds of volunteers performing various activities for charities and the needy around the area, has blessed many elderly Virginia residents. Richard Runion, who cares for his 79-year-old wife who has severe dementia, received volunteer work at his home which totaled about $2,000, he estimated.
The volunteers trimmed trees and hedges, cleaned and repaired gutters and washed his front window. Runion was grateful for the assistance since he rarely has time to leave his wife’s side.
Joe Shtulman, president of the United Way of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, said this was the largest Day of Caring to date. More than 200 volunteers showed up to help, he said. For more, read the story.
