Veterans Affairs Nursing Homes under Scrutiny for Neglect, Underprivileged Care

Some Veterans Affairs nursing homes have recently faced criticism for veterans’ care, each instance ranging from moderate to severe neglect. At one VA nursing home, a demented resident had allegedly caught his foot in the crevices of his wheel chair and remained unassisted for several hours. Inspectors reported that staff would walk past the helpless resident yet no one paused to assist.

Another report stated that one elderly resident developed five pressure ulcers within the time span of six months. Observers from many backgrounds are disturbed by the treatment of veterans at these nursing homes. “[T]here’s just no excuse,” one director of a non-profit advocate for nursing home care improvement.
