Virginia Department of Social Services and Adult Protective Services Release Annaul Report

A report recently released by the Virginia Department of Social Services and Adult Protective Services illuminates that abuse of vulnerable adults is at a record high. In 2011, there were 17,936 reports of abuse submitted to Adult Protective Services. Of those reports, approximately 59% were substantiated.

The reports to adult protective services where overwhelmingly related to the care and treatment of the elderly. Seventy-one percent were victims 60 years of older. The highest number of reports per locality came fromĀ  the Fairfax area, Richmond City, Staunton/Augusta/Waynesboro, Roanoke City, Roanoke County/Salem, and Lynchburg City.
