After almost no nursing home deaths in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the county has recorded 19 deaths, mostly at long-term care facilities, after the return of thousands of college students. All of the deaths were to people over the age of 60, revealing how “infections among younger people can fuel broader community outbreaks that ultimately kill some of the most vulnerable residents.”
This outbreak comes with a statewide surge in coronavirus cases, as “the state’s weekly caseload has quadrupled in the past six weeks.” These outbreaks often begin “among young people,” and then “migrate from younger to older populations.” Many blame “bringing students back to campus and allowing a party culture to reignite.” A recent study even revealed “genetic links between a number of nursing home COVID-19 cases” and the student population outbreak.
