World Wide Pressure Injury Prevention Day

Today, November 21, 2019, is World Wide Pressure Injury Prevention Day. The objective of this day is to increase awareness of pressure injury prevention and educate on this topic. The National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) has created an extensive media material package for all organizations to further educate on the matter, which can be found on their website here.

Pressure related injuries are one the five most common experienced by patients. Two and half million people a year develop a pressure injury. Patients with hospital-acquired pressure injuries have a median length of stay for four days. Around 60,000 patients die each year as a direct result of pressure-related injuries. Thee are 17,000 pressure injury lawsuits a year, coming in second to wrongful death suits.
