Five nursing home employees were sentenced for their involvement in the death of a patient. A respiratory therapist failed to attach a patient’s ventilator when she went to sleep. Charges were filed against a collective group of five staff working at the nursing home.  Sentencing for one staff was nine months in jail with three years probation.

A nursing home chain owner is under investigation by the FBI. His ownership extends to 1 in 14 nursing homes in the state where the facilities exists. Investigations have extended to individual nursing home facilities, where documents have been seized.

A nursing home facility is on the federal watch list after being cited for numerous deficiencies. The “Special Focus List” is due to an inspection that brought quality of care issues to light. One patient suffered a dislocated arm and a broken elbow.

Research reveals that nursing home patients in for-profit nursing home facilities are more likely to die within 6 months of living at a nursing home. The statistics show that the non-profit homes have patients with longer life spans. Some inquiry has been made as to what may be the foundational cause of the variance of life span between the two types of facilities.  “A lot of the research finds that for-profit facilities actually hire fewer staff.

A nursing home employee faces six counts of felony charges after fondling patients and exposing himself.  The charges include sexual battery and attempted sexual battery. One of the patients involved had dementia.  The employee was suspended after being reported and an investigation ensued.

Three nurses have been sentenced to three years probation after allowing an alarm to sound for more than an hour without responding.  One nurse will also serve 840 hours of probation as part of her sentence. A patient had serious medical needs and was in distress. The nurses did not respond to those needs. The patient died and the nursing staff did not offer any apologies to the family.
