This week, multiple nursing homes and assisted living facilities across Central Virginia saw a surge in COVID-19. A recent outbreak took place at Rosewood Village in Charlottesville, where there are over 30 cases, and two reported deaths of residents who tested positive.
In Owasso, Oklahoma, a local woman has rallied the community to encourage local nursing home residents. Tina Jones created a Facebook group aimed at “serving the elderly while they’re in quarantine or self-isolation during the pandemic.”
Ohio nursing home employees have recently revealed that they “often do not have enough personal protective equipment or PPE,” sometimes not enough to work on a COVID-19 unit.
As the effects of COVID-19 continue to reveal problems in America’s long-term care, some leaders are stepping forward to reimagine elder care. Many are looking at developing new solutions, focusing on “nontraditional nursing homes that provide more individualized care.”
