Veteran Affairs Nursing Homes Under Scrutiny

The Boston Globe reports that from April through December 2018, inspectors found deficiencies that caused harm to veterans at 52 of the 99 Veteran Affairs nursing homes they reviewed. In three of the facilities, it was reported that the veteran residents were in “immediate jeopardy.” In another eight nursing homes, the inspectors found veterans both harmed and in jeopardy. Mr. Curt Cashour, a VA spokesman stated that non-Veteran Affairs homes also have problems.

Government Nursing Home Database Flags Facilities for Abuse and Neglect

The Wall Street Journal has recently reported that a nursing home database by the US government has begun flagging facilities that have recently been cited for suspicious abuse or neglect of their elderly residents. Report Finds Health Workers Aren't Alerting Police of Likely Elder Abuse

According to recent research published by the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, many cases of abuse or neglect of elderly patients, which are severe enough to require medical attention, are not being reported to law enforcement by nursing home staff or health workers even though it is required by law. Family Asks State to Take Action Against Assisted Living Facility

College Students Move into Assisted Living Facility

 After years of positive interactions with volunteers from Winona State University, a Minnesota nursing home decided to take it a step further. In 2019, the Senior Living at Watkins invited six college students to live alongside senior residents in the manor. Students were selected through an application process with their room and utilities paid for.
